Warm weer, en dus breien met dikke wol... of juist niet?

As part of the summer videos, the ladies of Timzalot, the home of Handwerken, have already recorded a cozy knitting vlog. Back when the weather wasn't that warm yet... Fortunately, they warmed up naturally: Léia from her lovely knitting and Dini from the hard work... 00:00 What are we going to do 02:21 We are starting 05:00 Knitting and unraveling a swatch 12:00 A swatch in between 19:02 When do you wear a knitted coat? Léia and Dini take their seats at the crafting table in the middle of summer. Both have beautiful balls of yarn lying around that have been waiting for a project for quite some time. As the patterns and knitting books appear on the table, it soon becomes apparent that not every enthusiastic start automatically yields a successful end result. Dini shows that she started a sweater some time ago following a pattern. The further the work progresses, the clearer it becomes that she doesn't like the design after all. The sweater turns out too small, too short, and above all, much less beautiful than she had imagined. Instead of sticking to it, she decides without hesitation to unravel everything. According to her, that is simply part of needlework: sometimes you only discover along the way that a project needs to take a different direction. The yarn simply gets a new chance in a different design. Léia has plans too. She wants to knit a warm cardigan or a long coat from a wonderfully soft, fluffy yarn. Yet she doubts whether the material is sturdy enough. That is why she dutifully starts with a swatch. Soon, a cheerful discussion arises about the usefulness of swatches, combining different threads, and the question of whether or not you actually always have to follow a pattern. As is so often the case, it turns out that every needleworker has their own method in this regard. They discuss the relocation of the craft fair from Groningen to Heerenveen and speculate about the benefits of the new location. Better accessibility, ample parking, and hopefully many enthusiastic exhibitors again ensure that they are looking forward with curiosity to the next edition. Meanwhile, they leaf through pattern books and compare different models. Raglan sleeves, round necks, turtlenecks, and sweaters knitted from the top down all make an appearance. The conversation frequently takes a personal turn. For instance, Dini tells of a knitted coat that ultimately turned out to be far too heavy to wear comfortably. The material later got a second life as a blanket for her son. A beautiful piece of fabric is also discussed, from which two of Léia's grandsons now want a hoodie. In between knitting, they talk about all kinds of materials. They compare cotton and wool, explain why wool is naturally water-repellent, and reflect on the properties of different yarns. In doing so, they reminisce about previous visits to craft markets, where they saw how many wonderful uses exist for sheep's wool. Even a simple conversation about a swatch naturally turns into a little lesson in material knowledge. As always, there is also room for humor. They laugh about unfinished projects, poorly chosen patterns, and the amount of wool that accumulates in the house unnoticed. Even topics such as retirement, holiday pay, and funeral insurance are discussed in a lighthearted manner. At the end of the episode, not a single sweater or cardigan is finished yet. Dini has unraveled her knitting, and Léia has mainly knitted a swatch. Timzalot, the house of needlework, is an initiative by Dini Bangma and Léia Smit, who wanted to show together during the corona crisis how wonderful it can be to do needlework with a friend, or in the company of the Timzalots. It has been scientifically proven time and again that knitting, crocheting, embroidering, or whatever needlework technique you take up, can have a calming effect and relax your mind. With the added bonus, of course, that your work yields something valuable, simply because you made it yourself! And the fact that we are now entering almost our sixth year, with new ideas still coming in every week, shows just how virtually endless the possibilities are. You can also find Timzalot, the house of needlework, on the internet: www.timzalot.nl and on Instagram:   / timzalot  . Did you know that fun craft kits are available in the Timzalot shop? Check out www.timzalot.shop. The kits always come with plenty of materials and detailed instructions. Léia often makes an instructional video as well. You can find these instructional videos in the classroom (playlist on this YouTube channel, or www.timzalot.nl/leslokkaal. Yes, unfortunately there is a mistake there, but it is the correct URL). Of course, you can also just go to the website and select the 'classroom' tab. Music: www.bensound.com
