Tesselschade Friesland stopt met handwerken...

In 2022, the ladies of Timzalot, the home of Handicrafts, were guests at a sale of the most beautiful handicrafts by Tesselschade in Leeuwarden. Unfortunately, this wonderful work is coming to an end, and there will be a final handicraft sale at Post Plaza in Leeuwarden on June 13, 2026. In this video, we revisit the report we made back then about the work of Tesselschade and the beautiful items that were sold there. 00:00 Tesselschade is stopping handicrafts 03:50 Introduction by Léia 07:05 Visit to Tesselschade 18:03 Viewing the pieces 24:19 The piano runner Some time ago, Léia and Dini visited the annual handicraft sale of Tesselschade, Friesland branch, in Leeuwarden. Now that it has become known that the Frisian branch is stopping the sale of handicrafts, they look back once more on this special report. The association itself will continue to exist, but the sale of handmade items—for years an important source of income for supporting women's studies—is coming to an end. With this, not only a tradition disappears, but also a piece of cultural heritage. Beforehand, they explain exactly what Tesselschade is. The association has been dedicated to the economic independence of women for over a century and a half. With proceeds from the sale of handicrafts, donations, and memberships, women who need financial support to pursue an education are helped. During the visit, they meet the association's Frisian board members. They speak passionately about Tesselschade's work, the history of the organization, and the important role that needlework has always played in it. For more than 150 years, techniques such as embroidery, smocking, crochet, and fine needlework have been cherished and passed down. The association even possesses an extensive collection of patterns and knowledge that preserves old techniques for future generations. The ladies explain that behind every piece sold lies many hours of craftsmanship. Needleworkers receive materials, guidance, and a small fee for their work. In addition, the association offers them mutual contacts and support. Experienced instructors regularly assist with intricate stitches and techniques that are otherwise in danger of being lost. This creates a community where knowledge, creativity, and conviviality go hand in hand. Yet they, too, notice that times are changing. The number of active embroiderers is declining, and it is proving increasingly difficult to find new volunteers willing to continue the work. The question of how the association can appeal to younger generations occupies their minds. They are looking for new products, different materials, and contemporary ideas, without losing sight of the original character. Ceramics, knitted accessories, and modern applications of traditional needlework are being cautiously explored. Finally, Léia and Dini walk past the sales tables. Beautifully embroidered tablecloths, runners, napkins, aprons, Christmas decorations, and other handmade items lie everywhere. They admire the fine stitches, the perfect finish, and the enormous amount of work that went into each piece. They regularly recognize techniques from old needlework magazines and express their respect for the craftsmanship of the makers. Although handicraft sales in Friesland are coming to an end, the underlying philosophy remains very much alive: supporting women, developing talent, and preserving valuable crafts for the future. Timzalot, the house of handicrafts, is an initiative by Dini Bangma and Léia Smit, who wanted to show together during the corona crisis how wonderful it can be to do handicrafts with a friend, or in the company of the Timzalots. It has been scientifically proven time and again that knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or whatever craft technique you take up, can have a calming effect and relax your mind. With the added bonus, of course, that your work yields something valuable, simply because you made it yourself! And the fact that we are now entering our sixth year, still with new ideas every week, shows that the possibilities are virtually endless. You can also find Timzalot, the house of handicrafts, on the internet: www.timzalot.nl and on Instagram:   / timzalot  . Did you know that fun craft kits and yarns are available in the Timzalot shop? Check out www.timzalot.shop. The kits always come with plenty of material and detailed instructions. Léia often makes an instructional video as well. You can find these instructional videos in the classroom (playlist on this YouTube channel, or www.timzalot.nl/leslokkaal). Yes, unfortunately there is a mistake there, but it is the correct URL. Of course, you can also just go to the website and select the 'classroom' tab. Music: www.bensound.com
