Translanguaging Pedagogies in Action: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information
Erin Fleischman, a 4th Grade Teacher at Newlon Elementary School in Denver Public Schools, and her students demonstrate how translanguaging can support student sensemaking during a science lesson focused on the NGSS Science and Engineering Practice of Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information. In this video, Ms. Fleischman strategically customized a science lesson to incorporate translanguaging through the following tools and routines: explicitly welcome and engage with translanguaging, preview sensemaking words/phrases bilingually, use gestures to support key science concepts, provide students agency in language for reading and writing, provide and preview bilingual sentence stems to support communication. This video will support in-service and pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and administrators who would like to see what translanguaging pedagogies can look like to support student sensemaking in science classrooms. Guiding Questions: How does providing students with the agency to choose their language for reading and writing tasks support their ability to process and communicate scientific observations more deeply than a monolingual approach? What specific routines does Ms. Fleischman implement to explicitly welcome and engage with translanguaging, and how do these routines establish a classroom culture where bi/multilingualism is treated as an asset? How might you use gestures in conjunction with bi/multilingual previews of sensemaking words to help your students connect their home languages and prior experiences to scientific concepts? Note about video language: We recommend always using closed captions in the language of preference (English or Spanish) when you watch this video. In order to honor the dynamic language use of teachers and students, we have not embedded English language translations of Spanish language use into the video itself.
