Translanguaging Pedagogies to Action: Engage in Argument from Evidence

José Antonio Bermúdez, a 5th grade teacher at Bryant Webster Dual Language ECE-8 School in Denver Public Schools, and his students demonstrate what translanguaging can look like during a science lesson focused on the NGSS Science and Engineering Practice of Engaging in Argument from Evidence. In this video, Mr. Bermúdez demonstrates how he strategically customized a science lesson to incorporate translanguaging through the following tools and routines: explicitly welcome translanguaging, bilingual word wall, bilingual sentence stems, bilingual student materials, strategic pairing of students by home language. This video will support in-service and pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and administrators who would like to see what translanguaging pedagogies can look like in science classrooms. Guiding Questions: What cues did Jose use to create a "welcoming space” where students felt comfortable actually using their home languages during the lesson? Jose uses both bilingual word walls and sentence stems. While both are linguistics scaffolds, how do their roles differ in a science lesson? In what ways did translanguaging help students move beyond vocabulary memorization and into deeper scientific inquiry or conceptual understanding? Note about video language: We recommend always using closed captions in the language of preference (English or Spanish) when you watch this video. In order to honor the dynamic language use of teachers and students, we have not embedded English language translations of Spanish language use into the video itself.
