2025 Session 5: African Perspectives on River Water Quality [Albert Nkwasa]

This session provides perspectives on African ambient river water quality, a critical but often overlooked factor in water security. Climate extremes, land-use change, and socio-economic developments are intensifying pressures on river systems, affecting their capacity to provide safe and sustainable water. The presentation will focus on recent advances in modelling and monitoring river water quality, including applications of machine learning, process-based approaches, and remote sensing. Tools for uncertainty analysis, risk assessment, and scenario-based forecasting will be discussed in the African context, highlighting their role in linking water quantity and quality. The session will also address pathways for stakeholder engagement to support resilient and equitable river basin management.
