2026 Session 3: The UNESCO IHP Flagship Initiatives (FRIEND Water, ISI, IIWQ)

This presentation will introduce the ongoing activities of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme flagship initiatives: FRIEND-Water, International Sediment Initiative (ISI), The International Initiative on Water Quality (IIWQ). It will outline current research themes, regional networks, capacity-building activities, and collaborative platforms addressing hydroclimatic extremes, sediment management, and science–policy integration. The session will also explain how researchers, practitioners, and early-career scientists can engage—through thematic working groups, data sharing, joint projects, training events, and regional committees, highlighting concrete pathways to contribute to and benefit from these global water science communities.
