2025 Session 6: Convection-Permitting Models and their Applications for Climate Impact Assessment

Convection-permitting models (CPMs) represent a major advance in climate modeling, enabling the explicit simulation of convective processes at fine spatial and temporal scales. This seminar explores the new insights emerging from CPMs in terms of future changes in extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, midlatitude storms and tropical cyclones. It draws on recent developments, including international coordinated modeling efforts, highlighting how CPMs improve our understanding of local to regional climate responses. The seminar will also demonstrate the application of new CPM results within climate change impact assessment, providing examples of the translation of CPM outputs into actionable information for impact and adaptation planning.
