Le campane del Duomo di Reggio Emilia

The main church of the diocese of Reggio Emilia (Italy) is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. On the façade of the cathedral is an ancient tower housing five large bells that are still rung by the bellringers. The seven bells are tuned to the chord of Bb major and were cast by the Riatti family in 1791. The fifth bell is the only one of the seven remaining of the ancient concert, having been cast by Giovanni Battista Bimbi in 1738. In this video, the bellringers play all the traditional Reggio Emilia chimes for the great feast of the cathedral. The framework supporting the bells is a true masterpiece, as it is still the original wooden one from 1700. The first cathedral was built before 451, when the bishop attended a synod in the city of Milan. The first known cathedral was built within the walls in the 10th century, because the old one had been attacked by Hungarians. The Romanesque church was completely rebuilt between 1500 and 1600, while the barrel vaults of the naves were built in 1778. In the second half of the 20th century, the important Romanesque paintings on the façade were detached and placed protected from the elements in the Diocesan Museum. The Cathedral of Reggio Emilia was completely renovated in 2010. #bells #church #catholic #catholicchurch #bell #culture #italy #concert
