One can say that the conscience of the entire epic was embodied in Vidura. He never compromised with wrongdoing and always protested against any form of unrighteous action, yet he never displayed arrogance or disrespect toward elders or revered personalities of the time.Vidura possessed deep wisdom and foresight; he could foresee impending dangers and often warned others in advance. Unfortunately, no one heeded his counsel, not even Dhritarashtra. Had they listened to him, the Kurukshetra War might have been averted, and the Mahabharata would have unfolded in a very different way.Vidura — a great philosopher, scholar, and man of righteousness — was born to a court maid, incidentally due to the curse of sage Ani Mandavya. In truth, he was Dharmaraja himself, incarnated on earth as a human being in the form of Vidura. On another level, he was also an illegitimate (born through niyoga) son of Vyasadeva — just as Dhritarashtra and Pandu were born to Ambika and Ambalika, respectively. Vyasadeva had fathered these children to ensure the continuation of the Kuru dynasty after the death of King Chitrangada and the childless state of Vichitravirya. It was Bhishma who had abducted the three princesses of Kashi from their swayamvara, intending to provide queens for Vichitravirya. Under the guidance of the great Bhishma, the three sons of Vyasadeva — Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura — were brought up with proper education and training in statecraft and warfare.After the death of Vichitravirya, Pandu became king of Hastinapur. Over time, both Dhritarashtra and Pandu were married and had children — Duryodhana, Duhshasana, and their brothers and a sister on one side, and Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, and their brothers on the other. After the sudden death of King Pandu during his penance in the Himalayas, Kunti returned to Hastinapur with her sons, the Pandavas. This marked the beginning of an intense family feud over the kingship of the land. Duryodhana and his allies continuously conspired to destroy the Pandavas. Yet, every time, Vidura stood by the Pandavas, unequivocally protesting the traps and injustices orchestrated by the Kauravas. Meanwhile, the Pandavas married Draupadi, the daughter of King Drupada, thereby strengthening their position with the support of Lord Krishna, Balarama, and King Drupada. Assessing the gravity of the political situation, Dhritarashtra reluctantly invited the Pandavas back to Hastinapur and granted them half the kingdom — a barren forest known as Khandava-prastha. Through great effort, the Pandavas transformed this wilderness into the magnificent capital city of Indraprastha, with the help of Lord Krishna and the architect-demon Maya. When the Kauravas were invited to the grand inaugural ceremony of Indraprastha, Duryodhana was consumed by envy at its splendor. Driven by this jealousy, he conspired once again with his maternal uncle Shakuni. The Pandavas were invited twice to a rigged game of dice and were ultimately defeated, forced into exile for 13 years with an additional year of incognito. ......to be continued in part-2
