Reviews: "This is an excellent film from Basil Rathbone's wonderful Sherlock Holmes series, featuring two top-notch villains: a man, Henry Daniell, as Dr. Moriarty, and a woman, Hillary Brooke, as an illusionist with malicious intent. The film features the usual characters from Arthur Conan Doyle's novels: Mycroft (Sherlock's brother), Dr. Moriarty, Mrs. Hudson, and of course, Dr. Watson. The film has a disturbing atmosphere; it's in black and white, with light and shadow creating a disturbing atmosphere. The production design is first-rate, the film is very atmospheric, and the dark and gloomy underworld of London is beautifully drawn. Basil Rathbone's performance is magnificent; he's the best Sherlock Holmes in cinema, similar to Peter Cushing and Jeremy Brett on television. Basil Rathbone, as Holmes, is intelligent, stubborn, and Impetuous. Nigel Bruce plays Watson with humor, clumsiness, and cheerfulness, providing the perfect counterpoint to Holmes. Rating: Better than average, 7/10.
