Gilgamesh’s Tomb Was Sealed for Thousands of Years — For a Terrifying Reason
Gilgamesh’s Tomb Was Sealed for Thousands of Years — For a Terrifying Reason In the summer of 2003, a team of German archaeologists excavating adjacent to the ancient walls of Uruk opened a sealed stone chamber at a depth of eight meters. The sealing compound along the door frame was intact. Whatever was inside had not been touched since it was closed approximately 4,600 years ago. The chamber contained standard royal Mesopotamian burial goods. And three objects that do not belong in any known time period. A cylindrical metal container sealed with optically consistent glass of a quality that Western manufacture did not achieve until the 17th century CE. A stone disk with incised lines measured at a consistent depth of 0.3 millimeters with a tolerance variance of less than 0.01 millimeters — precision that no known tool could produce before the 20th century. And a small rectangular block made of a synthetic polymer composite — a material that human chemistry did not learn to produce until the 20th century. The Munich laboratory materials analysis runs to 47 pages. It has not been published. The lead archaeologist Dr. Jorg Fassbinder has not published a full excavation report. In 2014 — eleven years after the discovery — a single paragraph in a German archaeology journal noted that analysis of the chamber's contents was ongoing. No update has appeared since. The Epic of Gilgamesh, the world's oldest literary work, instructs the reader in both its first and final tablets to find a lapis lazuli tablet inside a copper box set into the foundation of the wall of Uruk. The 2003 excavation was adjacent to those walls. The sealed chamber was beneath the foundations. What was inside the chamber matches the description the epic has been carrying for 4,000 years. Nobody has told us what the metallic sheet inside the cylindrical container says. 📌 Subscribe for forbidden history and suppressed archaeology every week.
