Der versiegelte Tunnel von Dornberg – Was verbirgt Bayerns rätselhaftester Erdstall?

Deep beneath the Lower Bavarian village of Dornberg lies a network of narrow passages hewn into the rock – a so-called earth house. Hundreds of such structures can be found in Bavaria, Austria, and Bohemia. Yet, to this day, science cannot definitively answer who built them, when they were created, and what purpose they served. In this documentary, we examine the Dornberg earth house in the district of Kelheim – one of the best-documented sites in Central Europe. We examine the three official archaeological explanations: the refuge theory, the storage theory, and the cultic interpretation. And we ask the questions that are rarely asked in textbooks. At the heart of our investigation is a sealed passage at a depth of approximately seven meters – a tunnel that was deliberately closed off with stones and compacted clay at some point in the past. The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments dates the structure to the Middle Ages (10th–13th centuries). The passages are sometimes less than 60 cm wide and lead through narrow openings to several levels.
