It's the homeland of Russia's largest minority group: the Tatars. In fact, it's a republic with it's own language and religion. Tatarstan is a Muslim republic, but it feels distinctly different from the other Islamic areas of Russia like Chechnya and Dagestan. I was on a journey across Eurasia I had decided to take trains to traverse Russia. The first major stop after Moscow was Kazan, the capital of the Republic and often considered Russia's "3rd capital". I decided to stay for a day or two and see just how different it was from the rest of Russia. And I definitely wasn't expecting the reception I got..
