Kingsway: London's Forgotten Underground Tramway

Beneath one of central London's busiest streets lies a forgotten tunnel with tram tracks still embedded in the floor and a station finished in marble. The Kingsway Tramway Subway opened in 1906, carried five thousand trams a week at its peak, and was shut down in 1952, not because it failed, but because the politics shifted beneath it. Built on the ruins of a Victorian slum, forced underground by a class divide that banned trams from wealthy streets, and abandoned to a strange afterlife of film sets, flood control centres, and silence. #kingsway #londonhistory
