Among its myraid terrors is the use of trenches by the British and French armies at the Battle of Waterloo. It's very silly, it looks awful, and it just doesn't make any sense. But, other than the obvious (that the field was super muddy that day), why IS this a silly image? Why weren't trenches more commonly used in the 18th century? And, when they were used, what made the difference?
