In 1993, John Romero, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, Bobby Prince, and other developers from the small company id Software revolutionized both gameplay and technology. It's not as if the DOOM engine was lightweight. Its system requirements were quite substantial. But times changed, and after the original DOOM source code was published, a real saga began, with attempts to run it on everything: calculators, cameras, smartwatches, ATMs, and even within DOOM itself. Today, technology has advanced to the point where my favorite Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller can run a full-fledged game.
