Ernest Ashworth & Kentucky Colonels, "The Farmer's Other Daughter Gig"

This is the best video footage of the Kentucky Colonels that I am aware of. I just happened to find this footage on a very old DVD among hundreds of other very old DVDs. I put the disc in the DVD drive after cleaning it thoroughly and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized what was on it... It is the ( among Kentucky Colonels nerds) often referred to but seldom seen movie , The Farmer's Other Daughter by director, John Hayes and writer William W. Nortonome. The movie is a cornball attempt at comedy that features ONE singular redeeming quality - three numbers where the Kentucky Colonels, a young bluegrass band from the Los Angeles area is backing up Country singer Ernest Ashworth. The lineup of the Colonels at this time was Roland White – mandolin, Clarence White – guitar, Billy Ray Latham – banjo and Roger Bush – bass. Richard Greene sat in on rhythm guitar for this particular session. This was more or less a year after the Kentucky Colonels had recorded their instrumental Long Playing record Appalachian Swing at the World Pacific studios in one 13-hour session that lasted from 7 PM to 8 AM some time in March of 1964. That same month, the White brothers with Colonels' banjo player, Billy Ray Latham, cut Tut Taylor's Dobro in that same studio at 8715 West Third Street, Los Angeles. Most of the focus is on the vocalist, Ashworth but there are some really cool scenes of (most of) the band. Clarence is playing some phrases that some folks will recognize from Appalachian Swing in numbers like John Henry, Nine Pound Hammer. How to become a patron.
