The Thonburi Locomotive Repair Shop, located next to Thonburi Railway Station (or Bangkok Noi Railway Station), is a place few people know that, in addition to general train repairs, it also revitalizes old steam locomotives, bringing them back to life and restoring their historical roar. After the end of World War II, the Thai government invested over 50 million baht to repurchase the 303 km of the Death Railway within Thailand from the British. Currently, the State Railway of Thailand operates only 130 km of the line from Nong Pla Duk Station in Ratchaburi Province to Nam Tok Station in Kanchanaburi Province. Of the 173 km that was dismantled, the team surveyed the section from Nam Tok Station to Dan Chedi Sam Ong (Three Pagodas Pass), where several interesting remnants were found. The saying, "One railway sleeper equals one life," reflects the fact that not only were Allied prisoners of war from the West forced to work on this railway, but Asian laborers, or "Romusa," were also conscripted. Descendants of these prisoners of war recount stories of the past, the construction of the Death Railway, and the mysterious artifacts of Japanese military workers that remain a puzzle to this day.
