Liu Bei (161–223 CE) was a commander, politician, and founder of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era. Coming from a family claiming descent from the Han Dynasty, he built his power from a relatively weak position through alliances, diplomacy, and military campaigns, eventually becoming emperor of Shu Han in 221 CE. In historical accounts such as Records of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Bei is portrayed as a charismatic, tenacious, and skilled at commanding loyalty, but also ambitious and often influenced by political interests. His portrayal was later distorted in Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, Liu Bei is positioned as a nearly flawless hero and a symbol of Confucian virtue, while his weaknesses and political maneuverings are largely simplified or omitted.
