Ma Chao (176–222 CE) was one of the most famous generals of the late Han Dynasty and early Three Kingdoms era. He was the son of Ma Teng, a military ruler in the Liang region, which bordered the steppe tribes. Ma Chao was known for his horsemanship, bravery on the battlefield, and his leadership of cavalry. He rose to fame after leading the resistance against Cao Cao at the Battle of Tong Pass. Although ultimately defeated, his bravery earned him the respect of even his opponents. After suffering numerous defeats and losing political support, Ma Chao joined Liu Bei and played a key role in the conquest of Yi Province, which laid the foundation for the founding of the state of Shu Han. In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he is described as one of the "Five Tiger Generals" with exceptional fighting prowess.
