This type of shelter is popular in survival classes and books. Unfortunately in the Arid Scablands we have very few materials to work with, almost desert like, no logs for cabins or big fires, no pine boughs or palm fronds, no bamboo for making huts. We have grass and sedges in abundance though it just takes a little creativity to make a shelter. A similar shelter is taught in most survival classes and books called a "debris shelter". A famous movie Dersu Uzala shows a very similar technique.
