The man who orchestrated the scheme to ensure Juan José Lafaurie Cabal received $95,273,700 in taxpayer funds and was granted a preferential "small producer" loan of 400 million pesos is now heading the incoming government's transition team for the agricultural sector. His name is Indalecio Dangond Baquero, and he owns Open Loans OPL SAS, the company that approved this highly advantageous deal for a multi-millionaire family. Juan José Lafaurie, the purported "small producer," is the son of Senator María Fernanda Cabal and José Félix Lafaurie, president of Fedegán (the Colombian Federation of Cattle Ranchers). The latter owns vast tracts of land in the department of Cesar, the same department where Indalecio Dangond, who could be the next Minister of Agriculture, is from. Among the estates owned by José Félix and his family are “El Porvenir,” “La Luisa,” “Montecarmelo,” and “Guadalajara.” It was precisely to develop a palm plantation on this last estate that lawyer Juan José Lafaurie Cabal requested a low-interest loan from Finagro. He also applied to have almost a quarter of the debt covered by public funds—the largest subsidy a farmer can hope for. As if that weren't enough, he requested that the Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FAG), created to support people who cannot guarantee this type of obligation, act as guarantor for 80 percent of the loan. The landowner's son applied for these benefits in 2024, presenting himself as a “small producer.” The young lawyer, who enjoys posting photos on social media driving sports cars and showing off watches that cost millions—very much in keeping with the new national aesthetic—submitted financial statements to Banco Serfinanza, according to which he qualified for this type of assistance.
