Born in Medellín, Colombia, she received her academic training in the United States, where she earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Rutgers University in New Jersey. During her studies, she worked with the Department of Justice to develop interventions that strengthened the self-confidence of children who were victims of abandonment and abuse. Later, she completed her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology in Florida, gaining a deep understanding of emotional regulation and traumatic relationships through her experience in maximum-security prisons. Her distinctive and effective approach, based on empathy and understanding, has been crucial in addressing issues of self-esteem and emotional attachment. Founder of Healthy Mind Specialists in Tampa, Florida, María Alejandra has been an active voice in promoting mental health, participating in conferences and educational programs on media outlets such as Telemundo and Univision. She currently leads a team of Spanish-speaking therapists who have impacted people in more than 20 countries. She recently published her book, "The Child I Was, The Adult I Choose to Be." This work addresses childhood wounds and emotional attachment. Her book promises to combine theory and practical experience. Her ambition is to establish international mentorship programs in Latin America to train therapists and expand access to the resources and knowledge necessary to treat attachment and bonding issues. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ 00:00 Intro 00:42 What motivated you to study clinical psychology and specialize in mental health, specifically emotional attachment and emotion management? 02:36 What are your thoughts on combining traditional and contemporary therapeutic methods to treat complex emotional disorders? 03:29 What experiences influenced your early work with the Department of Justice and in challenging environments such as prisons and psychiatric hospitals? 05:04 What challenges does clinical psychology currently face in terms of access to mental health care, and how can these be overcome? 06:06 What is your distinctive approach to treating self-esteem and emotional attachment issues? 08:53 How did you develop your therapeutic method based on empathy and understanding? 10:04 What impact has dialectical behavior therapy had on your clinical practice? 11:18 What is the main objective of your workshops in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, and the United States, and what topics will you cover? 14:13 What can the public expect from your book, "The Child I Was, the Adult I Choose to Be"? 16:45 How do you see the future of research in clinical psychology, and what areas do you think deserve more attention? 17:39 How has your work contributed to the promotion of mental health and the treatment of psychological disorders? 18:48 How has public perception of mental health evolved throughout your career, and what changes do you consider most significant? 20:18 What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of running your own clinic, Healthy Mind Specialists? 21:37 What is your favorite book or literary work, and why? 22:25 What valuable lessons have you learned throughout your career? 23:49 Could you highlight the importance of mental health and the need to seek help early? 24:56 What advice would you give to young people who want to pursue a career in clinical psychology? 26:00 What is your message for people struggling with emotional attachment issues and self-esteem?
