The Human Was Warned That Predators Rule the Galaxy—She Just Asked, “Which Ones?” | Sci-Fi Stories
The Human Was Warned That Predators Rule the Galaxy—She Just Asked, “Which Ones?” | Sci-Fi Stories I was the one who warned her. That's the thing I have to live with—and the thing that makes me the right person to tell this story. I was the junior orientation officer assigned to brief the first human envoy on how the galaxy really worked, and I gave her the warning we gave every newcomer, the warning that was the foundation of everything: that predators rule the galaxy. That the strong rule the weak. That it's the law of nature, and she'd better learn her small place in it and stay afraid. And the human did not get afraid. She just looked at me—this small, soft newcomer—with a calm I didn't understand, and she asked me a question. Two words. A question I could not answer. And in the silence where my answer should have been, the foundation of the galaxy's whole order began, quietly, to crack. She asked: "Which ones?" My name is Tessar. I'm Quoll—a small, timid, prey-descended people, the kind the doctrine said existed to be ruled. I believed that doctrine my whole life. I taught it to every newcomer. Predators rule the galaxy—it had always been so, and it always would be, fixed and inevitable as gravity. And then a human named Maya asked me to name the predators. To count them. To count us. A dozen, ruling thousands. And the moment I tried to turn "predators rule the galaxy" from a law of nature into a list of names and numbers, I felt the whole lie shift under me—because a law of nature has no names and can't be questioned, but a list of names is just a list of powerful people, and powerful people can be outnumbered. And wrong. Almost everyone thinks she asked "which ones" as a threat—the human implying she was the greater predator. They have it exactly backwards. This is the real story of the gentlest, simplest, most devastating question in the universe—and how it set a galaxy free.
