Alien Invasion for Earth’s Resources Backfires When Humans Turn Everything into Weapons | HFY
Alien Invasion for Earth’s Resources Backfires When Humans Turn Everything into Weapons | HFY I wrote the report that started the invasion. I want to say that first, before anything else, because everything I'm about to tell you is, in some sense, my fault. I was the surveyor. The one who assessed Earth's value and recommended we take it. I sat in orbit for two hundred days and I counted what that world was worth — the oceans of water, the metals, the energy, wealth beyond cataloguing. And I counted its weapons, and found them negligible. A rich, soft, undefended prize. Take it. The arithmetic was perfect. The number was wrong. Because I came from a civilization that knew the difference between a tool and a weapon. And I had just recommended we invade the one world in the galaxy where that difference does not exist. Where it has never existed. Where a hundred thousand years of living on a world that was always trying to kill them built a species that picks up anything — a harvester, a barrel of fertilizer, a factory, the very resources we came to steal — and knows, instantly, in the oldest part of itself, exactly how to make it lethal. We came to take Earth's resources. We didn't understand that, to a human, the resources are the weapons. They were always the weapons. This is the story of how four hundred thousand of my people flew into a warehouse full of guns, started picking up the inventory, and were genuinely surprised when it started going off. There's no glorious final battle. The humans never even planned anything. They just did the most natural thing their nature allowed — and it was the most devastating thing that could possibly have happened to a civilization like mine. 🔔 Subscribe for more long-form HFY and sci-fi narration — new stories every week. 💬 Did you catch the real backfire before the end?
