Point and Crossing Part - 5 : Pre-curvature, P.Way Maintenance & Turn-in Curve Basics
Welcome to Part 5 of our Point and Crossing series in Railway Engineering! In this lecture, we continue our deep dive into track maintenance, focusing on stock rail wear limits, joint responsibilities, and switch zone tamping procedures. We also introduce the basics of the lead assembly and turn-in curves. See file here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_oBD... Topics Covered in this Video: Pre-Curvature Requirements: We explain the pre-curvature parameters required for stock and tongue rails based on standard RDSO drawings for thick web and conventional switches. Stock Rail Wear Limits: We discuss the criteria for rail renewal, including section loss limits of 6% for 52kg rails and 7% for 60kg rails. Vertical and Lateral Wear: We detail how vertical wear is measured at the center of the rail (limited to 13mm for 60kg and 8mm for 52kg) and lateral wear limits for curved and straight tracks. Corrosion and Burrs: We cover safety limits for corrosion depth in the web or foot and the importance of grinding away sharp burrs on the gauge face. Maintenance & Housing: We emphasize that proper housing of the tongue rail must always be ensured, even if stock rail wear remains within permissible limits. Interlocked vs. Non-Interlocked Points: We break down the joint maintenance responsibilities of P.Way and S&T staff for interlocked points, and clarify that P.Way has complete responsibility for non-interlocked points. Switch Zone Tamping: We outline the delicate tamping operations, including the mandatory disconnection of stretcher bars, pull rods, and tie bars, as well as the required presence of S&T staff. Lead Assembly Introduction: We introduce the lead assembly, which connects the heel of the switch to the toe of the crossing. Lead Curve Mechanics: We explain why the lead curve carries no cant (superelevation) and how the lead radius directly determines the maximum permissible speed. Make sure to watch until the end for a review of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) relevant to P.Way engineering exams!
