How to Turn With a Defender on Your Back - Then Make the Right Pass

A defender on your back can rush you into a bad touch - this is how to you turn out of it and find the right pass. In this session, Stevi and Zach are training how to turn out of pressure you can't see coming - using your scan before the ball arrives and your body to feel where the defender is. Each variation adds pressure, from scanning for a color cue to dealing with a live defender to receiving out of the air under pressure, so by the end you're making the right read at game speed. 0:00 - Building confidence with a defender on your back 0:25 - The scan-and-turn reaction drill 2:30 - How to choose between the killer downfield pass and the easy outlet 2:58 - Dealing with live pressure 3:20 - Don't overlook your hands to locate that pressure 4:04 - How to respond to heavy pressure vs more space 4:47 - Knowing where your defender is keeps you from turning INTO them 6:25 - The most important part of receiving out of the air under pressure 7:35 - How to anticipate your defender's next move in real time 8:52 - The one attribute that separates good, great, and pro players In This Video You'll Discover: The Scan That Tells You Where to Turn - Check your shoulder before the ball arrives so you know where the pressure is, and where to turn out of it. Turning Away From Live Pressure - Reaching back with your hands lets you feel where the defender is applying the most pressure, and gives you clues on how to escape it. Make the Right Pass, Not the Hero Pass - If the easy outlet is open, take it! Forcing the long ball when your hips aren't squared up or you're rushed is how you lose possession. Receiving With Your Back to the Goal - Protect the ball with your body before you turn: don't give up an easy turnover by turning before you've secured the ball, or it'll be an easy takeaway for your defender. Competing at the top level of collegiate soccer taught Coach Stevi Parker that the players who stay composed under pressure are the ones who keep the ball. This drill builds that same composure - scan early, trust your touch, and make the decision before the defender has a change to take the ball from you. This progression is great for building confidence with young players like U10 through U14, and is great for players who often receive the ball while facing their own goal.
