In this video, I will address a crucial topic for those who suffer from spondylolisthesis and seek effective solutions to strengthen the spine and relieve lower back pain. Spondylolisthesis occurs when a vertebra slips over the vertebra below it, resulting in a series of complications and discomfort. What is Spondylolisthesis? Spondylolisthesis is characterized by the displacement of a vertebra that slips over the underlying vertebra. This displacement can cause the vertebrae to come closer together, ligament laxity, and compression of the nerve roots and spinal cord. The result is a series of uncomfortable symptoms that affect the patient's quality of life. Causes and Symptoms of Spondylolisthesis: Vertebral Approximation: Ligament laxity allows the vertebrae to shift, leading to spondylolisthesis. Neural Root Compression: The approximation of the vertebrae compresses the nerve roots, causing pain and weakness. Spinal Cord Compression: The displacement of the vertebrae can compress the spinal cord, resulting in pain and other complications. Psoas Muscle Action: The psoas muscle pulls the thoracic and lumbar spine downwards, displacing the vertebrae forward and sideways. Muscle shortening and weakness: Shortening, tension, and weakness of the chest muscles can hinder lung expansion and affect the spine. Nerve compression: Nerve compression can lock the diaphragm and cause shortness of breath. Paravertebral weakness: Lack of support for the spine due to weakness, tension, and shortening of the paravertebral muscles can worsen the condition. Hip weakness and pain: Weakness and pain extending from the hip to the feet reduce spinal support. Exercises to strengthen the spine: In this video, I will present a series of exercises focused on strengthening the spine and reducing the symptoms of spondylolisthesis. I will also show you exercises you should avoid, because although they are indicated for strengthening, they cause more tension, shortening, and muscle weakness. Avoid: Exercises with a ball between the knees; Use of the adductor machine; Use of elastic bands to strengthen the adductors; Spending too much time sitting. Practice: Chest expansion exercises; Thigh muscle stretches; Waist stretches and strengthening; Paravertebral muscle stretches and strengthening.
