Austria is also the birthplace of my paternal grandfather, although he was from another city, but it's always nice to be able to return to his homeland and visit. In this episode, we share the best things to do in this magical city, known for its music, Baroque architecture, and alpine landscapes. For Audrey, it also holds special significance as the birthplace of her paternal grandfather. Get ready to discover fortresses, catacombs, imperial gardens, traditional desserts, and more. 🏰 Hohensalzburg Fortress: History and Panoramic Views 🗝️🔭 We started the day at Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe's most important and best-preserved attractions. We purchased the full ticket (€16.60 per person), which includes the funicular and access to all museums. Inside the fort, we explored: Fortress Museum: Daily life, history, and artifacts of the Prince Archbishops. Puppet Museum: Historical puppets from different eras. Rainer Regiment Museum: Weapons, uniforms, and military history. Panoramic Tower: Our favorite part, with unforgettable views of the Alps and the city. 🪦 St. Peter's Cemetery and Catacombs: Hidden Treasure ⚱️⛪ By chance, we arrived at St. Peter's Cemetery, the oldest in Salzburg. We toured the catacombs carved into the rock, with viewing platforms and tunnels made of stone and wood. It was the great surprise of the trip: a place full of flowers and tranquility, steeped in history. Illustrious figures, such as Mozart's younger sister, are buried here. Access to the catacombs costs only €2 per person. 🕍 Salzburg Cathedral and the Golden Ball Sculpture 🎼🟡 Afterwards, we visited the Baroque Salzburg Cathedral, rebuilt several times since 777 and updated in the 17th century. To one side, we find the iconic golden ball with a man on top, a modern work by Stephan Balkenhol in homage to Paul Fürst, creator of the famous Mozartkugel chocolates, a true local symbol. ⛰️ Monk's Mountain and Medieval Fortification 🌄🚡 We took the elevator up Monk's Mountain (Mönchsberg), one of Salzburg's five mountains, named after the Benedictine monks. We paid €4 per person and enjoyed another spectacular viewpoint and an ancient medieval fortress. 🧀 Austrian Gastronomy: Must-Try Dishes and Desserts 🍽️🍫 A review of the typical food was a must: Kasnocken: Alpine-style noodles with cheese, a creamy delight. Salzburger Nockerl: Giant soufflé, fluffy as a cloud, served with sugar and jam. A local tradition inspired by the mountains. Mozartkugel: Small chocolate balls filled with marzipan and pistachio. We tried several versions and bought them as gifts. Marzipan, a sweet almond paste, is the star of the show. The perfect souvenir. 🎹 Mozart Route: House Museum and Plaza 🏛️🎻 We visited Mozart's birthplace, now a museum with original artifacts, pianos, and stories about his life. A few blocks away, Mozart Plaza features a commemorative statue, ideal for classical music fans. 🌊 Walk along the Salzach River and Mirabel Gardens 🌷🎥 We enjoyed walking along the banks of the Salzach River, with its milky turquoise waters and its source in the Alpine glaciers. We visited the Mirabel Palace and Gardens, free to enter and famous for scenes from "The Sound of Music." Mythological statues, fountains, benches hidden among flowers, and large geometric gardens, ideal for strolling and taking photos. 🍹 Nightlife and Excursions from Salzburg 🚂🍺 At night, we stopped by the Salsach-Salzbar, a floating bar on the river.
