How to Lift up in Navasana | Tolasana Tutorial | Ashtanga Primary Series

Learn to lift between each of the five Navasanas in Ashtanga Primary Series. This lift (Tolasana/Scales pose) builds the core compression and pelvic floor strength essential for jump throughs and jump backs throughout your practice. Most people think it's about arm strength or arm length. It's not! David and Jelena breakdown this lift with three setup tips that make the difference between staying grounded and lifting off—plus the progression that gets you there even if you can't lift yet. What you'll learn: The 3 Setup Tips: Cross shins HIGHER (not ankles)—shifts shin angle parallel to floor, creates instant height advantage Knees to SHOULDERS (not chest)—opens hips, stops hip flexors from overworking, allows compression Round your back + tuck tailbone—roll back on sacrum so your spine helps you instead of fighting you Hand & Arm Mechanics: Hand placement: in front of hips (not beside)—balances weight on both sides of arms instead of dumping it forward Inward arm rotation + depress scapula (don't squeeze shoulder blades)—accesses shoulder strength, creates the lift The Progression (If You Can't Lift Yet): Modified version: maintain round back, come onto toes first (not straightening spine) Try it out and comment below.
