Andhra Pradesh has approved a policy allowing postgraduate Ayurvedic doctors trained in Shalya and Shalakya Tantra to independently perform 58 surgical procedures, including general, ENT, and eye-related surgeries. The move, cleared on December 23 by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, has ignited a national debate on patient safety, medical training, and the boundaries of alternative medicine. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the policy, warning that modern surgery requires deep training in anatomy, anaesthesia, emergency care, and post-operative management — knowledge they argue only MBBS-MS or MCh doctors possess.
