Weighing only 4.6 kg, but measuring 42 cm in height and 35 cm in diameter, this heater is not exactly small. It has a 2.5-liter kerosene tank, which, depending on the setting, should last for up to 12 hours. Almost the entire housing is made of high-quality stainless steel and looks very elegant. The function of the adjustment mechanism isn't immediately obvious at first glance, but that's what we're here for. To get a better look, I remove the burner from the heater, first taking off the top cover. The stainless steel burner can now be carefully pulled upwards out of the heater. It is made of several layers of stainless steel sheet and encapsulated in heat-resistant glass. Here you can see the extensive experience AWN has in burner design. Now the function of the control knob becomes clear. When turned to the right, the wick rises fully from the tank, allowing it to be lit from the front. Should the kerosene heater tip over during operation, the weight on the left side ensures that the wick is pulled downwards and the flame goes out. This guarantees safe operation, even if something unforeseen should happen. The fuel level indicator is located behind the weight. According to the manufacturer, the tank should neither be filled to the brim nor emptied completely, as insufficient fuel will naturally lead to increased soot production and cause the wick to burn out quickly. The rule of thumb with this tank is: never completely full and never completely empty. The tank cap is protected by a lever during operation. Pulling this lever upwards provides enough space to unscrew the cap. Only special kerosene should be used in the burner. This is virtually odorless and purified to such an extent that combustion is almost residue-free. I decided to fill the tank halfway with 1.5 liters for initial use. This is easiest to do with a measuring cup and a funnel. The special kerosene, as promised by the supplier, really is almost odorless. As planned, the tank is now half full, and now it's a waiting game. According to the operating instructions, there should be approximately 30 minutes between the initial filling and starting the burner so that the wick can fully absorb the kerosene. In the meantime, let's take a look at the replacement wick that I ordered at the same time. Unfortunately, the instructions don't say anything about replacing the wick, but I think it's just a matter of loosening the four nuts. I'll film that later when I need to replace it. Now the 30 minutes are up, and it's time to light it. To do this, the wick is turned all the way up, and the burner is lifted until it can be lit with a match or lighter. This requires a bit of skill and some strength, as the burner can only be lifted by the small handle. But it works, and since we waited patiently, the wick ignites immediately. The flame is clearly visible from above. Since the amount of combustion air is fixed through the holes, nothing needs to be adjusted. The manufacturer recommends checking the burner's correct position by moving the handle back and forth. Great, everything is as it should be. A few minutes later, the stainless steel sheets begin to glow, and the heat output slowly starts. Operating this heater in strong winds is not recommended, as the flame could be blown out or significantly affected. Furthermore, toxic gases are produced during combustion, which is why the kerosene heater should only be used in well-ventilated rooms. I was impressed by the design and functionality of the device and can highly recommend it.
