Balangan Regency is a regency in South Kalimantan province, with its capital city being Paringin. Balangan was established as a separate regency from North Hulu Sungai Regency, established under Law Number 2 of 2003, dated February 25, 2003, concerning the Establishment of Tanah Bumbu Regency and Balangan Regency in South Kalimantan Province. Balangan officially became a regency on April 8, 2003, and its anniversary is celebrated annually. The motto of Balangan Regency is "Sanggam": an abbreviation of "Sanggup Bagawi Gasan Masyarakat" (Banjar language, meaning: The ability to carry out work (development) based on sincerity for the community). The original inhabitants of Balangan are the inhabitants of the Batang Balangan River Basin (DAS), which was conquered by the food minister Aria Magatsari on the orders of the Maharaja of Negara Dipa, Ampu Jatmaka, who held the title Maharaja di Candi. The Banjar people who inhabit this former district are called Orang Balangan, Orang Lampihong, or Puak Balangan. The Dayak people, who are part of the Meratus Dayak tribe, are called Dayak Pitap. There is also a sub-ethnic group of Dayak Lawangan, called the Dayak Deah, and a sub-ethnic group of Dayak Maanyan, called the Dayak Dusun Halong. Balangan Regency is located in the north of South Kalimantan Province. Geographically, Balangan Regency is quite strategic because it is traversed by the Trans-Kalimantan route and has great potential to develop as a transit city for travelers from Banjarmasin to East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. Balangan Regency covers an area of ​​1,819.75 km², comprising 8 sub-districts and 160 villages. The largest sub-district is Halong, with 659.84 km², while the smallest is Lampihong, with 96.96 km². Administratively, Balangan Regency borders Tabalong Regency to the north, Kota Baru Regency and Pasir Regency in East Kalimantan to the east, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency to the south, and Hulu Sungai Utara Regency to the west.
