Just behind Wakayamako Station on the Nankai Electric Railway, there is a shack settlement that seems a little hard to believe in the Reiwa era. This video walks through every alleyway and explores the ruins of houses that were once built freely (and without permission) on the sandy beach of government-owned land. It is what is known as an illegal occupation, but it originally began as a settlement for people who were burned out in the massive air raids on Wakayama during the Pacific War and had nowhere to go. While it was unavoidable in the beginning, it is not good that the situation has continued to this day. At the very least, they are probably not paying property tax on the land, and it is unlikely they are paying rent either.
