Hiroshima https://kikutani.hp.peraichi.com/sapporo ------ We constantly live our lives worrying about what others think of us. We feel energized when we receive high praise, and disheartened when we receive low praise. When we are praised, we become motivated and enthusiastic about everything, but when we are criticized, we become depressed and dislike everything. It's as if we believe our personality is determined by how others perceive us. Children are constantly anxious about what they are thought of in their class at school, students are on edge trying to gain the affection of the opposite sex, and adults work hard to be recognized at work. Unless we live on a desert island, it seems we'll never be able to escape the need to care about what others think of us until the day we die. In Buddhism, this feeling is called "desire for honor." We, who are bundles of desire for honor, present a different version of ourselves to our friends, so that they will like us. We act in a way that pleases our parents, so that they will think highly of us. We behave in a way that pleases our bosses, so that they will approve of us. We act in a way that pleases our boyfriends. We're like chameleons. As you know, chameleons are characterized by their ability to change the color of their skin to blend in with their surroundings. Green on green leaves, brown on brown leaves—just like those chameleons, we have a version of ourselves for our friends, a version for our parents, a version for our bosses, a version for our boyfriends. As we constantly change ourselves depending on who we're with, we eventually lose sight of our true selves. It's like a clumsy chameleon, frantically changing its color to blend in with its surroundings, forgetting its original color and becoming bewildered. The Buddha taught that our reality is that we are driven by the desire for fame, exhausted, and live a life of drunken dreams without knowing our true selves. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "Understanding Buddhism" Official LINE is here ----------------------------------------------------------------- ・Updates on videos and columns ・A mini-corner explaining Buddhist terms in simple terms ・Exclusive projects for LINE friends, etc. ▼"Understanding Buddhism" Official LINE is here https://lin.ee/GbzwYBX ----------------------------------------------------------------- 20-Lesson Free Email Course is here ----------------------------------------------------------------- https://peraichi.com/landing_pages/vi... ↑The free email course reveals the answer to the "meaning of life" as taught in Buddhism.
