Alex Anderson: RAF Welcomes its First Recruit with Asperger's | Pride of Britain 2022

Labelled a naughty child, Alex Anderson struggled in his early years, moving between schools and experiencing real distress. However, a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome at nine marked the start of a positive change, leading him to become one of the first individuals with the condition to join the Royal Air Force. Before his diagnosis, Alex found it hard to settle, causing significant challenges for both him and his family. After moving schools four times and even running away, he finally received specialist support from an Autism Unit, which helped him work towards his GCSEs and a career. Alex dreamed of joining the RAF but faced setbacks, including a rejected application. When entry rules changed, he applied again with support from The Prince’s Trust, which helped him build skills and confidence. This time, he was successful. “Asperger’s impacted my school life, it was challenging and really affected my health and wellbeing,” he explains. Now 22, Alex works as a Logistic Supplier for the RAF and prioritizes giving back to help others achieve their dreams.
