3 Dads Walking: £880K Raised in Memory of Daughters Lost to Suicide | Pride of Britain 2022

After enduring heart-breaking losses, Andy Airey, Mike Palmer, and Tim Owen formed a close bond through the suicide prevention charity Papyrus. Andy lost his daughter Sophie, 29, just before Christmas 2018, while Mike’s daughter Beth, 17, died in March 2020, shortly after Tim’s daughter Emily, 18, also took her life due to pandemic pressures. The trio came up with the idea of a sponsored walk between their homes in Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Norfolk to raise funds for Papyrus, and awareness of suicide in young people. Initially aiming for £3,000, their efforts garnered an astonishing £880,000 as they connected with many affected by suicide during their 15-day trek, advocating for enhanced mental health support in schools. Their subsequent walk covered 550 miles over 31 days, visiting all four UK parliaments and concluding on World Mental Health Day, raising their total to over £1 million. Andy noted that many bereaved parents they met were shocked to learn that suicide is the leading cause of death for those under 35 in the UK, questioning why it isn’t discussed more. Mike expressed that while he doesn’t want to be a part of the '3 Dads Walking' group, it provides a platform to fight back and make a meaningful difference.
