In Memoriam — Elegy from the album In Memoriam by Flavio Villani Elegy was the first music I played after losing my partner. For almost two months I couldn't bring myself to sit at the piano. When I finally did, I decided to record myself as a way to hold the moment. All that came was a single repeated note. So I stayed with it. Gradually, almost without noticing, that one note became a melody. The melody became a conversation, and the conversation became this improvisation. There is nothing heroic about this music. It doesn't try to overcome grief or transform it into something beautiful. It simply sits with it. When I listen back, I hear someone who is exhausted rather than courageous. Someone trying to make sense of a world that suddenly no longer made sense, one note at a time. When in the studio in Berlin I tried my best to reproduce it as siminarly as I had months before and this is what emerged from that process. Thank you for listening.
