Quad Cortex | Il Suono di Smells Like Teen Spirit (Factory Only)
The exact gear used for the recording of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (from the 1991 album *Nevermind*) is still a subject of debate, but the most reliable sources agree on this setup. Kurt Cobain primarily used a 1969 Fender Mustang with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickup in the bridge position. The track's main distortion comes from a Boss DS-1 placed before the amp—specifically, a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp paired with power amps and 4x12 cabinets. Producer Butch Vig recounted that Cobain arrived at the studio with a fairly simple setup and that much of the sound was achieved using the Mesa. An Electro-Harmonix Small Clone was used for chorus, along with a touch of reverb for ambience. I’ve created four scenes on the Quad Cortex: Scene A for the intro, Scene B for the riff, Scene C for the clean tone, and Scene D for the solo. The preset starts with the standard Adaptive Gate, followed by a volume pedal to help manage the song's dynamic levels. Next is the compressor—a CS-3—which I use across all scenes to tighten up the sound. Then comes the DS-1 (used for the solo) and the amp, which is a capture of the Studio Preamp paired with a Simul-Class power amp and a Mesa 4x12 cabinet loaded with V30 speakers. The amp's gain settings change depending on the scene. Finally, there’s a parametric EQ, a chorus effect for the clean and solo sections, and a Plate Reverb for ambience. That’s all for today. I think the result turned out well, and I hope you enjoyed the video.
