The Kingdom of Navarre - The Kingdom Forged in Alliance with Muslims and the French
The Kingdom of Navarre, born in the Pyrenees (8th century) from the autonomy of the Vascones, reached its apex under Sancho III the Great (11th century). Its subsequent division created Castile and Aragon, future rivals. Navarre’s longevity was due to the Fueros, which limited royal power. The weakness, brought about by civil war (15th century), culminated in annexation by Ferdinand the Catholic in 1512. Despite subordination to Castile, Navarre maintained its fueros and institutions.
