The Kingdom of Aragon – The Mediterranean Empire that Vanished from the Map
The Kingdom of Aragon was born in the Pyrenees (1035) with Ramiro I and became the Crown of Aragon upon uniting with the County of Barcelona through Petronilla and Ramon Berenguer IV. In the Mediterranean, it expanded under James I (Balearic Islands, Valencia) and later to Sicily, Sardinia, and Naples. Unique in its “pactism,” it had Cortes, fueros, and the Justicia as checks on the king. The union with Castile (Ferdinand and Isabella) preserved autonomy until the War of the Spanish Succession; after Almansa, the Decrees of Nueva Planta (1707–1716) abolished its institutions. Legacy: a mosaic of modern Spain.
