Upon returning to America, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in Philosophy in 1935. He then returned to Japan where he studied Buddhism with his teacher, Rev. Haya Akegarasu. Accompanying his teacher on lecture tours, Kubose traveled extensively throughout Japan, Korea, China, and the United States. In 1944, after World War II, Kubose moved to Chicago, where he founded the Chicago Buddhist Temple. Throughout his life, Kubose emphasized and taught the nonsectarian Buddha-Dharma to all. Often cited for his work on social justice, civil rights, and community relations, Gyomay Kubose wrote numerous books on Buddhism, meditation, and ethics. Throughout his life, he focused on bridging the gap between Eastern spirituality and Western society. Each day is not just the passing of another day, each day is significant and full of meaning, it is a reverent day and worth living. Each day is a day of fulfillment and gratitude.” Gyomay Kubose. “Buddhism teaches that whatever exists is the result of karma and that you are responsible, not something else. No external agent is responsible for your happiness or despair.” Gyomay Kubose. “Enlightenment was not only Gautama Buddha's, but you too, individually, must find this new perspective of life, this new point of view in your life and in all things.” Gyomay Kubose.
