The Madrid City Hall Nativity Scene, a work by José Luis Mayo Lebrija in the Spanish tradition, is displayed in the Cibeles Palace. It is composed of 200 figures and about 20 buildings. Each year, its scenery, created by the Madrid Nativity Scene Association, features variations. It also includes variable lighting that follows the day-night cycle. In 2025, the artificial mountain in El Retiro Park hosted an elegant monumental Sicilian Nativity scene from the Basanta-Martín collection. The display was created by José Luis Mayo and his Art Workshop, featuring figures handcrafted by the Italian artist Angela Tripi using clay and fabric. It also included some animated figures by Nicolás Salmerio. Thirdly, we visited Angelicum, in La Lonja of the Casa del Reloj in Arganzuela, a magnificent monumental Neapolitan Nativity scene with more than 200 figures. The pieces also belong to the Basanta-Martín Collection, and the display was directed by José Luis Mayo, covering an area of 100 square meters with 500 architectural and scenographic elements. Detailed pastoral and urban scenes are combined with the colorful procession of the Magi and the elegance of the Nativity surrounded by a large choir of angels. The splendor of the Neapolitan Nativity scene reflects its 18th-century society with its trades, customs, and mythological and popular figures. Finally, in the Renaissance courtyard of the San Isidro Museum, we can enjoy a life-size Nativity and Adoration of the Magi alongside an exhibition of Nativity scenes from around the world, again from the Basanta-Martín collection and curated by José Luis Mayo.
