The redevelopment plan for the building in front of JR Sapporo Station has been changed. The plan prioritizes the construction of clinics and a bus terminal to create a vibrant area, while also anticipating the opening of the Shinkansen to Sapporo. JR Hokkaido announced that it will change its plan for the redevelopment building at the south exit of Sapporo Station to a "phased development" plan divided into two parts. The West 1st and West 2nd block buildings, which were planned as a single unit three years ago, will now be connected by a pedestrian deck. The height will be 15 meters lower than the previous plan, resulting in a building approximately 230 meters tall with 34 floors above ground. The contract with the American Marriott, which was originally planned to occupy the building as a hotel, has been terminated, but an international-standard hotel is still planned. Construction will begin with the 11-story building in West 2nd block, followed by the development of the "station plaza" and "sky garden" to create a vibrant area. The completion dates are 2030 for West 2-chome and 2034 for West 1-chome, with a total project cost exceeding 400 billion yen. However, with an eye on the opening of the Shinkansen to Sapporo, the aim is to create "a new face for Sapporo."
