In 1543 (Tenbun 12), Yamana Rioki, the head of the Yamana family of Bingo Province, abandoned Ouchi Yoshitaka after his failed attack on Gassan-Toda Castle and switched allegiance to the Amago clan. He moved to seize the Numata-Kobayakawa territory, which had been lost to the Izumo clan after their lord's defeat. However, due to a stratagem by Mori Motonari, the Yamana army suffered a complete collapse, and the Ouchi army, joined by the forces of Aki's deputy governor, Hironaka Takakane, pushed back to Yamana's castle, Kannabe Castle. The Aki local lords wanted to destroy the Yamana clan while they were ahead, but Ouchi Yoshitaka, who had become reluctant to expand his territory through war, disbanded his Bingo invasion force, thus saving Yamana Rioki's life. Meanwhile, Amago Haruhisa, who had successfully defended his castle, faced fierce resistance from the Ouchi-aligned northern Bingo lords. He then shifted his target to Hoki Province and sent the Shingu clan there. This extinguished the sparks of war in Aki Province. However, in November of Tenbun 14 (1545), an event occurred that plunged Motonari's heart into despair. His wife, Oku (Myōkyū), who had supported him for approximately 30 years, passed away due to illness. Motonari, who had never taken a concubine and had loved only Myōkyū, was deeply saddened. At the same time, realizing his own death was approaching, he looked ahead to the next generation of the Mōri clan and took the bold step of handing over the family headship to his eldest son, Takamoto. Furthermore, he arranged for his third son, Takakage, who had been adopted into the Takehara Kobayakawa family, to become the head of the Kobayakawa family, and for his second son, Motoharu, to be adopted by Kikkawa Okitsune, thus becoming the head of the Kikkawa family, as per Ōuchi Yoshitaka's wishes. Furthermore, he pulled off the extraordinary feat of marrying the adopted daughter of Ouchi Yoshitaka to the head of the Mori clan, Mori Takamoto, thus solidifying his position as the most powerful local lord in Aki Province. In September of Tenbun 18 (1549), having entrusted the administration to Takamoto and become unburdened, Motonari mobilized local lords such as Kobayakawa, Amano, and Hiraga, and used stratagems to conquer the Yamana territory of Bingo Province, expelling Yamana Rioki and putting an end to the six-year-long "Kannabe War."
