Currently, 7 billion 937 million 386 thousand 613 people live on earth. It will exceed 8 billion in 2022. When I was born, there were barely 4 billion people. In fact, according to this site that shows your estimated world ranking according to your birthday, I am the 4 billion 39 million 379 thousand 781st person. We had reached 7 billion 11 years ago. When we reached this number, Turkish Airlines made a very good post on Twitter. “There are 7 billion people in the world.” They were saying. “If you meet every person for a second, it will take you 200 years to meet everyone!” There are various human faces in the image below the post. Which of these faces do you think is the most typical human? Answer: None! These faces you see here all represent the minority. Statisticly, a 28-year-old Han Chinese man is currently the most typical person on the planet. This most typical person is right-handed. Earns less than $1000 per month. Has a cell phone but no bank account. There are 9 million people living like this. This face is the most typical person in the world! The world's largest age group is 28, the largest ethnic group is the Han nation in China, and the most populous country as you can imagine is China. I think it is useful to look at such visualizations and infographics once in a while as a reminder of how precious time is. It also enriches your worldview. All kinds of people live on this planet. Do you know what would happen if I had a birthday party and invited people who were born on the exact same day as me? 261,561 people would come. If I tried to host all of them at the birthday party, we wouldn't be able to find a place to gather in. If I would just invite 10898 people born at the same hour as me, maybe we can fit in a stadium to celebrate. But as you can see, the number of Turkish speakers is quite a minority. It is necessary to use a common language to be able to communicate with the rest. You might be thinking that because of the population or since the most typical person is Chinese, the most typical language spoken is Chinese. But no, the most spoken language in the world is English with almost 1,5 billion people. 20-21 out of every 100 people speak this language. Therefore, I am already able to speak with one fifth of the 10898 people I invited to my birthday. Now let's do an interesting thought experiment together. If we invited all the people living in the world to Turkey, how much space would we need? For this, we first need to calculate the static crowd density. How many people can we fit in 1 square meter/3.2 square feet? The upper limit of this is calculated as 4.7 people. Let's take it as 4, let’s say 4 people can comfortably stand in such a space. Let's round the world population to 8 billion from now. It means that we will need a total area of 2000 square kilometer/494 210acres area. Let’s roughly calculate the surface area of Istanbul the megacity. From Gebze to that point over there. Like this. When we make a rough calculation like that we see the metropolitan Istanbul covers an area of 4000 square kilometers/494 210acres. Which in turn means we can fit the whole World two times, or we can fit the worlds population to the european side alone, four persons per unit-standing up. If we want to fit everyone inside a building, this time we need to calculate in cubic meters/cubic feet instead of square meters/square feet. We fit 4 people in 1 unit before. If we built a building that is 2000 meters/2.4miles long and 2000 meters/2.4miles wide, 16 million people would fit on one floor. If each floor is 2 meters/roughly 6.5feet high, so that the tallest can fit, we can accommodate 8 billion people in this 500-storey building with a height of 1000 meters/3 280.8feet and a total of 4 billion cubic meters/ almost 141 billion 258 million 666 thousand cubic feet. We can roughly fit this building in the historical peninsula of Istanbul. Let's not get the builders' minds off, Don’t try this in real life, this is just a thought experiment! We don’t need anymore huge buildings. what about all the people who have ever lived? Demographers take human history back to 200,000 years ago. During this time when modern homo sapiens roamed the earth, 109 billion people born, lived and died. The languages we speak, the food we cook, the music we enjoy, the tools we use… We learned everything we know from them. When we add the 8 billion alive today, we are talking about a total of 117 billion lives.
