✈️ Tailwheel flying – the pinnacle of aviation? 😳🔥 This trip had been planned for a long time – and finally, the weather was perfect. We headed to Mengen-Hohentengen to see none other than Henry, a true veteran of the aviation world. Pilot, flight instructor, aerobatic pilot, banner tow pilot, and at home in the skies for decades. Many know his name – and his legendary flying skills. Because one thing quickly became clear to me: Flying a tailwheel is on a completely different level. 😅 Flying itself isn't the problem – the real challenge lies in takeoffs and landings, especially in crosswinds. Anyone who has only flown nosewheels before will immediately notice: You have to actively work at it. Every meter counts. Every movement. We flew Henry's red Savage – a true bush plane with character. Even taxiing on the ground felt completely different. Then we took to the air and got straight down to business: controlled takeoffs, precise speed, and clean landings. The landings were especially challenging. Maintaining exactly 90 km/h makes for a perfect approach – but even the smallest mistakes are immediately punished. Henry had to intervene here and there, but eventually, I got the hang of it… and in the end, I was able to fly solo. 🚀 Tailwheel flying was one of the most intense and fun experiences I've ever had.
