Por que não Existem Árvores nas ilhas Shetland?
This is Shetland, an archipelago without trees, a mix of nature, a hunger for autonomy, and even influence from beyond the Earth's surface. They belong to Scotland and are located here in the North Sea. Only 23,000 people live in this region. And the whole group is made up of 100 islands, and only 15 of them are actually inhabited. And this Scottish archipelago has a total area of approximately 1466 km². The main island, Mainland, occupies the position of the third largest island in Scotland and is also the third largest island surrounding Great Britain. With an area of approximately 969 km², Mainland stands out as the largest among the islands of the archipelago. The predominant language in the Shetland Islands is English, specifically a variety of Scottish English. However, due to the history and cultural influence of the islands, there is also a local dialect known as "Shetlandic" or "Shetlandic dialect". The islands have a culture more similar to the Nordic countries than to English culture. The islands are the northernmost point of the United Kingdom. And they are only 300 km from Norway and 450 km from England. Thanks to this geographical position, these islands also received the Viking heritage. And the typical Viking houses are still standing in the region today; many have been preserved and it is possible to visit them. More than 80% of the population has Norwegian DNA, meaning many of them are descendants of the Vikings who occupied the region. And it wasn't just the houses and genetics that were maintained for so long; the typically Viking festivals have been celebrated from that time until today. Being passed down from parents to children for over 1000 years. One of the main festivals in Shetland is the Up Hely Aa. The ritual is performed with many torches and lasts a whole day. And the highlight of this ritual is setting fire to a Viking ship. It is set ablaze by everyone, who throw flames at it, and the ship burns in flames. The flames are welcome at the festival, as it takes place in winter, with temperatures below zero. And it is usually accompanied by snow. There are other rituals and festivals that take place on the islands, many tourists are attracted by them. And if you ever go to see this festival and are a little lucky, you may be able to see the Northern Lights. Although it is a little difficult to see, it is possible to see the Northern Lights in places with less artificial light. You need the darkness of night to see the sky shining in colors. Shetland can be considered a remote and difficult-to-access location, but even so, the islands attract many tourists from all over the world. The south of this island has a unique site for world archaeology, this happened thanks to a strong storm that wore down the surface of the earth, causing erosion. With the land collapsing, a structure was revealed: a settlement from millennia ago. This small city is more than 4,500 years in the past; its remains were covered and would possibly never have been discovered otherwise. It is called the Jarlshof archaeological site; this underground city is made of perfectly aligned stones and contains houses, places for prayer, bathrooms, common areas, among others. Nearby, there is an unusual natural phenomenon: two islands connected by a strip of white sand. This strip connects the small island of San Ninian to the main island. The Shetland Islands have approximately 2,700 km of coastline. And various activities are promoted near the sea, such as walks and guided tours. But why are there no trees on the Shetland Islands? An interesting factor is that it is impossible to be on the island and not be at least 6 km from the coast. You will always be near the sea, on one side or the other of the island. And on these islands, we can see a very unique nature. In other words, you don't see it in many other places. The animals are another peculiarity of the region. It's possible to find an immense variety of birds, many of which seem to have come straight out of a cartoon. Like the puffins. And they can be observed from the incredible Sumburgh Head. Which is an area located at the southern tip of the main island. At the top, there is a historic lighthouse that was built in 1821. The lighthouse is an impressive structure that has guided navigators through the challenging waters around the islands. The surrounding area is a nature reserve, home to a variety of wildlife. Near the water, we also have a vast marine life such as seals, otters, and whales. On land, there are many sheep, which are raised by many people on these islands.
