US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Congress for an additional $67 billion to fund military operations against Iran. This request, exceeding initial estimates, is drawing criticism, including from some Republican lawmakers, who are demanding greater transparency regarding US strategy and the true cost of the engagement. The human toll is also fueling the debate. Since the start of the war in Iran on February 28, 17 American soldiers have died on the front lines. This toll could rise for the United States, but Donald Trump has no intention of revising his plans. For every soldier killed, Iran will pay "many times" the price, the US president threatened, as the American military continues its strikes. Meanwhile, Houthi rebels continue their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, maintaining heavy pressure on international maritime traffic. Iran's nuclear program remains the main point of contention. Donald Trump reiterated that he was prepared to strike the most heavily guarded nuclear facilities, including underground sites like Natanz and Fordow. But another question remains: where are the stockpiles of highly enriched uranium? The US administration had mentioned their transfer under international supervision, but this proposal never materialized. This situation is reminiscent of the consequences of the US withdrawal, in 2018, from the Iran nuclear deal signed under Barack Obama. The goal was to secure a stricter agreement. Eight years later, the assessment is stark. Iran has significantly developed its uranium enrichment capabilities, while negotiations remain at a standstill. In Lebanon, diplomatic efforts continue. President Joseph Aoun's visit to the United States aims to strengthen cooperation with Washington, both on security and economic issues. Meanwhile, the gradual resumption of air and trade links is seen as an encouraging sign for a country severely affected by successive crises.
