The French trapped by the heatwave France is sweltering and increasingly tense after a stifling night and a spreading heatwave. The entire country is now under heatwave alert, with red alerts in 54 departments, from Seine-Maritime to Pyrénées-Atlantiques, including Brittany, the central region, and Île-de-France. In total, more than 90% of the French population is exposed to extreme and exceptional heat. Transport networks and hospitals are already under strain, and a new crisis unit was convened today as the death toll rises. Forty people have drowned in France since June 18, the Prime Minister announced. Sébastien Lecornu described it as a "tragic scourge of drownings," which primarily affects young people. "Faced with the high demand on emergency services and ambulances due to the heatwave," the Prime Minister also activated level 2 of the ORSAN plan, designed to strengthen the healthcare system. This will notably allow for "reinforcing medical dispatch capacities" and "mobilizing the personnel necessary for hospital operations," the head of government explained on X. Impact on crops and livestock, risk of fire, and the arduousness of work: the agricultural sector is also far from spared by the heatwave. Faced with this ongoing situation, Annie Genevard announced initial measures on Tuesday to limit the consequences of these abnormally high temperatures on agricultural activity, which are raising fears of a "hairdryer effect." This phenomenon results from the extremely rare combination of temperatures exceeding 42°C, winds surpassing 30 km/h, and humidity levels below 20%. This combination is particularly dramatic for summer crops (corn, sunflowers, sorghum, and soybeans). As temperatures rise and records are broken one after another, the political debate is becoming increasingly heated, and politicians are making numerous references to Spain. Staggered work schedules, continuous workdays starting in June and ending at 3 p.m., special leave for climate change, closure of bar and restaurant terraces when they lack sufficient shade during periods of extreme heat, air-conditioned shelters in cities, misting systems installed in the streets… On the other side of the Pyrenees, adaptation to climate change has been underway for several decades.
